Engineering a Cleaner Future: BA BioDisc Installation at a Rural Home
RA Dalton Ltd recently carried out a full septic tank replacement for a three-bedroom domestic property, ensuring full compliance with current UK wastewater regulations and delivering a long-term, environmentally sound solution. The project involved the installation of a BA BioDisc 450 invert packaged sewage treatment plant, replacing the existing outdated and non-compliant system.
Initial Assessment and Site Strategy
Following an initial site inspection, our wastewater specialists identified the need to replace the existing septic tank with a packaged sewage treatment plant. The proposed solution involved rerouting the inlet drainage via a new pipe laid along the right-hand side path, with a drop pipe descending the stone wall into the garden below. This new pipe was connected to the existing inlet chamber at the top of the garden, with a further section running parallel to the hedge to the designated installation area.
Tailored Drainage Design for Challenging Terrain
The site presented several challenges, including limited space and complex ground conditions consisting of clay, sandstone and gravel. To accommodate these constraints, our team designed a bespoke drainage layout that ensured optimal flow and compliance with building regulations, as well as allowing for backfilling the shallow trench in the concrete path with gravel.
Efficient Installation of the BA BioDisc 450 System
The BA BioDisc 450 sewage treatment plant was installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, securely housed within a concrete encasement. This system was selected for its proven performance in domestic wastewater treatment and its ability to meet environmental discharge standards.
Key installation components included:
- 36 metres of 110mm pipework from the sample point to the adjacent storm drain, which ultimately discharges to the river below.
- Reworking of existing inlet pipework using 110mm pipe encased in granular material.
- Installation of a non-return valve onto the existing sample point to prevent backflow during short-term flooding events.
- Commissioning of the system to ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance.
Managing Logistics in a Restricted Residential Space
Due to limited access and space, bulk materials such as gravel were tipped at the front drive and stored in the rear garden. The team utilised a 5T excavator and 1T dumper to manage excavation and material movement efficiently. Orange barrier mesh fencing and ground protection were installed to maintain safety and minimise disruption to the property.
Environmental Compliance and System Commissioning
The treated effluent from the new system was discharged into the adjacent storm drain, which flows to a nearby river. To ensure environmental safety, the outlet sample chamber was fitted with a non-return valve to prevent any backing up during short-term flooding events.
Safe Decommissioning of the Existing Septic Tank
As part of the final phase, the existing septic tank was fully drained, decommissioned, and infilled with granular material, topped with excavated soil. This ensured the old system was safely retired and the area restored.
Building Notice and Regulatory Oversight
RA Dalton managed the Building Notice Application, site inspections and the provision of completion certificates. This ensured full compliance with local authority regulations and provided peace of mind for the homeowner.
Additional operational logistics included:
- Provision of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
- Site setup with temporary fencing
- Delivery and fuelling of site machinery
- Excavation and reinstatement of turf following pipe installation
- Supply of two skips to remove surplus spoil
