Dye Tests, watercourse discharges and the Bioficient 1.

Earlier this year in July we received an enquiry from a customer who was looking to have a sewage treatment plant installed to serve their home. They were located in a small village near Thirsk where none of the properties were connected to mains sewer and all of them had septic tanks or sewage treatment plants.

Unfortunately for this customer in particular certain shortcuts had been made during the initial build of the property and the waste was discharging into a field drain which had been installed to deal with the water from the highways and flowed straight to the nearby beck.

The customer carried out multiple tests themselves including dye tests to determine the discharge location. This was invaluable information for us to provide a quotation as the more detail that can be provided in the earlier the stages the more accurate we can be in our scope of works.

Dye tests and invaluable information.

Access was not the easiest on this site in particular as all the machinery was required to be tracked between two properties, this predicament meant there was a requirement for another machine on site located at the front of the property to load concrete into the dumper and to load a trailer to move spoil off site.

The system we proposed to install to the rear of the property was a Kingspan Klargester Bioficient 1 package sewage treatment plant, due to the site limitations and installation location the shallower construct of the Bioficient was best suited in comparison to the deeper install BioTec or BioDisc.

The low profile lid on the Bioficient also proved preferable for the customer as there was less visual effect on the garden.

The Kingspan Klargester Bioficient 1 Sewage treatment plant.

The Bioficient 1 was installed with the accompanying required inlet and outlet pipework, as the system held the BSEN 12566-3 certification the treated effluent was able to discharge directly the watercourse.

Following the installation of the Sewage treatment plant we always recommend that the manufacturer’s recommendations for a maintenance contract is complied with, for this system in particular annual servicing is the best way to keep the system running efficiently and to ensure that the EA requirements are adhered to.
