No matter how long you work in the industry (for some of us more years than we would like to admit!), it is very, very rare you will attend two sites with the exact same scope of works. Some sites may be similar on paper, but you must always remember that in practise many things can in fact be different.

With this in mind our contracts managers take each site as they come, each detail is specially tailored to suit the customers’ requirements but also what is needed to be compliant with the 2020 General Binding Rules.

More often than not issues are first outlined with existing systems either during a service, empty or inspection and this was no different for a site one of our contracts managers attended in Derbyshire. Our initial remit was to attend site to confirm the size, condition and compliance of two septic tanks on a property both servicing different dwellings, whilst one was operational the other was no longer fit for function and had started to show signs of failure.

We advised the customer that the best course of action would be to replace the existing with either a package sewage treatment plant or with a ‘like for like’ Septic tank unit. Either option would be functional in application and ultimately, they both came with corresponding pros and cons. As the soakaway appeared to still be in functional order and to limit any unnecessary outlay to the customer we opted to quote to connect to the existing with further investigations on the condition and suitability being recommended.

Once all options had been outlined to the client the chosen course of action was to install a new septic tank designed to serve the 3 no. properties and small commercial unit, therefore the system we proposed to install was the Klargester Alpha 4,600 litre septic tank. The Alpha septic tank is also lovingly known as the ‘onion tank’ due to the spherical nature of the unit with the small stem like neck.

The new proposed installation was to be adjacent to the existing and we diverted the existing inlet drainage via a new inspection chamber, installing approximately 6 metres of 110mm inlet drainage and likewise with the outfall we installed a new outlet sample point and short section of drainage to connect back to the existing.

No matter the time of year our installation teams work for as long as daylight will allow to get the job complete, normally in late September we would start to experience the more saturated weather conditions however this year we experienced nothing short of uncharacteristically mild weather. This worked in our favour with ground conditions being dryer and no manufactural or material delays thankfully meant that the job ran seamlessly taking only 4 days from arrival on site to backfill and tidy up.
